If a timeline fails to load, show error message in the middle

Currently, if a timeline fails to load, an error message appears in the status bar (at the bottom). This is easy to miss.
Right after the loading animation disappears, show an error message in its place if the timeline is still empty. Don't duplicate the status bar text, but potentially replace it.

Agreed. The status message in the bottom isn't adequate here.
Also think a network console would be a good idea, but that's another ticket.
